Google My Business

Behind a simple, free Gmail address (which you can easily set up for your business if you don't already have one) is a powerful array of tools to help you promote your business - especially if it's a local business.
Google My Business is your hub for managing your Google Maps listing, accessing valuable data about your listing  Google My Business even offers a free web page for your business..
Used well, your Google Map listing can be a powerful way to draw attention (and new enquiries!) to your business through page #1 results when people are looking for your kind of products and services.

While many people know about looking for businesses in local search results, Google My Business has some very welcome, recently added surprises up its sleeve.

1.  You can create a Google Business Website (free!)  Through Google My Business which works perfectly on all devices.  Your key business information is fed through from your map listing, but you can add pictures and lots more detail about your services and products, too.   AND you can give the page your own web address (if you have a url that's just sitting doing nothing) or use a google based address if you prefer.  You can also use your free Google business website alongside your main website - so - why not?!

2.  Deals and Offers are a new feature which helps you publicise details of current offers over a 7 day period and provides a 'deep-link' to the page on your main site where visitors can learn more or buy from you. Your current Deals and Offers automatically display within your Google Maps listing.

Business reputation throughout history has always mattered. Online, it matters even more than ever.  Maps give your clients an easy way to leave public feedback.   Not surprisingly, Google takes public reputation seriously, and rewards businesses which have more and better feedback than others.  Equally, a business which has received lots of positive feedback is more likely to attract new customers!

So it's important on an ongoing basis to encourage your clients to leave reviews to build your reputation.   And it's also important to make sure that you reply to your reviews.  This gives your visitors an important sign not only of what others think about you, but about the level and quality of your customer service.

Yes you can!  Google My Business has been set up to make it very easy to add your own listings.

However, you need to be aware of a couple of things:

1. You'll need to be able to verify your ownership of the business
2. It's best to make sure your listing is 100% complete
3. There are only limited Search Engine Opimisation tools available through your Google Maps listing and business website. That means you need to be careful what you write and how you write it.

Although Google is the most widely used search engine, Bing (Microsoft's search engine) is very important too, as new Windows installations come with Bing as their default search engine.  Bing Maps work in a similar way to Google Maps. It makes good sense to set up a listing here at the same time - especially as there is no cost and it can produce a Page#1 listing for your business!

A Microsoft account (Outlook, Hotmail or Live email address) is the only requirement for adding and managing your Bing Maps listing. You can create one in minutes if you haven't got one already.   Bing My Business is the management hub for your map listing that you will access with your Microsoft Account.  This hub is also the point of access for some powerful webmaster managment tools for repots and diagnostics related to your website.

Bing Maps feature a similar list of information as Google Maps. (see above).

One difference is that Bing Maps offer a business description for each listing instead of a separate business web page.  For both Bing and Google Maps listings, it is important to write your content carefully and accurately to  reflect your business activities and the products and services you offer.

Reviews for a business on a Bing Maps listing are supplied by other reviewing bodies such as Yelp.   There is no direct opportunity to submit a review through a Bing Maps listing.

Important:   Check that your business name, address and phone number is exactly the same across your business listings.  Inconsistency, even in minor details, is widely understood to have a bad effect on your search engine performance.
